What was once a vacant lot will soon become 54 affordable homes in Minneapolis.
On September 16, Alliance Housing, project partners, funders, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of 2116 Nicollet, a long-anticipated development that will bring deeply affordable housing, community space, and new offices to the Whittier neighborhood.
The project will create 54 affordable homes, including housing opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and individuals with disabilities. When complete, the development will also feature a community gathering space and provide new office space for both Alliance Housing and Whittier Alliance.
Alliance Housing acquired the property in 2021 and spent the following years working with residents, partners, and funders to create a development plan that reflects community priorities. The recent groundbreaking marks the culmination of years of planning and collaboration and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the site.
GMHF supported the project through a predevelopment loan, providing flexible financing during the early stages of planning. Our predevelopment capital helps housing developers advance critical work before construction can begin, helping move promising projects closer to groundbreaking and, ultimately, completion.
Congratulations to Alliance Housing, Whittier Alliance, and all the partners who helped make this milestone possible. We look forward to following construction progress and celebrating the opening of these much-needed affordable homes in 2027.
