MHA Investors Club: Safe at Home – What Housing Providers Need to Know

This session will provide guidance as to how a housing provider remains legally compliant when handling the private information of a Safe at Home participant:
- Learn the basics of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), including who is protected and which programs are covered.
- Gain practical guidance on confidentiality requirements, including what information may (and may not) be disclosed under VAWA and how a “Notice to Landlord or Property Managers” may affect the classification of a Safe at Home participants’ data.
- Understand documentation requirements and verification procedures under VAWA and Safe at Home.
- Compare VAWA protections with Minnesota law, including key differences from Minn. Stat. § 504B.206
- Learn lease bifurcation and emergency transfer obligations under VAWA.
- Walk through how Safe at Home and VAWA affect evictions.
- Discuss best practices, including developing and implementing policies and procedures.
