GMHF recently completed its year-long engagement with the inaugural Housing & Health Equity Fellows Program cohort. 30 fellows from six of the largest healthcare systems in Minnesota (Allina, Blue Cross MN, CentraCare, Essentia, Children’s Minnesota, and M Health Fairview).
To commemorate the occasion a special dinner was held at McKnight Foundation. Executive leadership from each organization joined to celebrate the work of this group and committed to advancing institutional efforts in community impact investment around affordable and stable housing. Minnesota Housing Commissioner Jennifer Ho kicked off the evening which included a fellows panel and a special message from Tim Robinson, CEO of Nationwide Children’s Hospital (view here).
Healthcare For Housing – a New Coalition for Housing Stability
H&HE fellows were convened by GMHF, the Center for Community Investment, and Minnesota Housing six times over 10 months with a mix of virtual and in person training and participation in the national Accelerating Health Equity Conference last May. Each of the Fellows teams have developed plans for transformational work on the part of their healthcare institutions in MN. In addition to the actions of individual institutions the members of the learning cohort have asked GMHF to continue its convening role in 2024.
The cohort created a new coalition, Healthcare for Housing, to act as a collective voice for housing investment. Healthcare for Housing will be co-chaired by Santo Cruz from CentraCare in greater MN and Ben Waltz with Blue Cross Blue Shield MN. In addition, M-Health Fairview, Allina, MN Children’s and Essentia Health in northern MN have designated lead staff to work in this collective action coalition.
In 2024 Healthcare for Housing will begin its work in three areas:
- Policy and Systems – servicing as champions and a collective voice on housing and community investment in social determinants of health.
- Shared Investment & Programs – connecting healthcare and housing partnership for advancing an affordable housing pipeline of projects.
- Promoting Learning – continue efforts to learn together and educate others on the critical role housing has on community health.
GMHF and members of Healthcare for Housing welcome opportunities to share learnings and engage with new partners interested in action at the intersection of housing and health equity. For further inquiries and information please contact Eric Muschler, Program Director: email@example.com.
