Iron Range affordable Housing Initiative Creating Workforce Housing as the Foundation for a Thriving Economy
Program Goal: Help Minnesota’s Iron Range communities meet their workforce housing needs related to the expansion of the region’s mining, forestry and ancillary industries.
After years of high unemployment, Minnesota’s mining communities are once again positioned for economic growth. Eight planned and existing large-scale industrial developments could add as many as 6,100 new permanent jobs across the Iron Range. Over the past several years, Greater Minnesota Housing Fund has collaborated with local planning and development organizations to meet the workforce housing needs of Iron Range cities and towns. As part of regional planning efforts under the Range Readiness Initiative (RRI), led by Iron Range Resources, Greater Minnesota Housing Fund:
While industrial expansion has slowed with the economic downturn, housing rehabilitation and reinvestment is a critical need in this region, which has the some of the oldest housing stock in the state.
